Membership

Want to join Hiyaku Studio? That’s great! We love welcoming new members.

However, as you may have guessed, it’s not like we can just let anybody into our group. There are specific requirements which you must meet before we can consider your application. Some of you may be wondering, though, ‘why might I bother?’. Well, for those who don’t see the point for all this, here’s a run down of what benefits you may see from being in an artist circle. **Prerequisites and contact details are further down the page.

.

Why should I consider joining?

Please bear in mind that we’re not implying that membership in an artist circle is at all necessary. Some artists tend to work better on their own, or perhaps they don’t see the need in any of the benefits (listed below) of being in an artist circle. That’s perfectly fine. However, there may be some who could see this as a good thing and we’re just giving these people the opportunity to be part of it if they so desire. On that note, here’s some of the benefits if you are curious:

  • It’s more fun to collaborate with friends than it is to work on a solo project. Yes, if you join we’ll be your friend (oh, a perk).
  • It’s a good source of inspiration. You may become inspired by being active in a collaborative art project, or from seeing the others produce amazing artworks which will stand alongside your own.
  • You’ll get plenty of encouragement. If you need feedback on artwork or ideas, we’ll be more than happy to give our two cents. In fact, we tend to give each other a tug in the right direction even if it wasn’t requested.
  • You can get a free ride off our expertise. Say, for instance, you want to feature your work in an artbook, but can’t design one worth a crap. That’s totally fine, since a couple of our members do a sufficient job at it. The amount of background knowledge one may need in order to produce a decent book may be a bit daunting for a first-timer, eg: Adobe Indesign know-how, paper weight, bleed, margins, gutter, binding options, etc. With us, you can just worry about submitting artwork and leave all the editing to the poor bugger assigned to making that year’s book.
  • It’s very cost effective. There are certain products or printing services which are far too costly for the one, average individual. In a group, the cost is divided. This means we can work with more expensive resources and see substantially better quality in our products while paying less for it.

What do I need in order to join?

After recent discussion on the matter, we have since revised how we recruit our members. The more the merrier concept is nice, but (for us to retain our identity as an artist circle) we have decided to start taking into consideration whether your style will add extra flavour to our dish, or dilute it. On that note, if you want to join Hiyaku Studio, there are still a few other prerequisites we must consider. You’ll need to have the following:

  1. Drawing skill that hovers around our level.
  2. A drawing style that is, to an extent, Asian or manga/anime inspired; and also brings something new to our existing lineup.
  3. Willingness to contribute as much as the other members (this means pitching in for production costs as well).
  4. Willingness to show commitment to the team. This means not copping out/keeping the editor waiting for no good reason.
  5. An expectancy to stick around for a while. Of course, we allow members to leave whenever they desire, but if you’re unsure about staying in the first place then you should probably save us both the hassle and don’t apply for membership.

It’s also very helpful to know at least one of the Hiyaku members beforehand if you wish to apply. It’s not essential, but if we know you to be a friendly, trustworthy individual, it’ll be much easier for us to accept your application than it is if you were a complete stranger.

So how do I join?

If you have met all the requirements and want to be a part of Hiyaku Studio, simply click the ‘contact’ tab on top of the page and send us an email which includes a link to some of your artwork. Or you can just send the email to d.young@hiyakustudio.com using your own means. We’ll get back to you with an email that states whether you have been accepted or not. If you aren’t accepted, we’ll provide reasons as to why that is. It’s never personal, so please don’t take it as such if the situation occurs. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us using the method/s mentioned.

Other than that, we look forward to seeing more great members who’ll join us to take on bigger and better projects to come.
